Dr. Anthony Viola is a fellowship-trained orthopaedic spine surgeon who specializes in treating a wide variety of conditions involving the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine. His special interests in spine surgery include degenerative conditions, complex revision spine surgeries, minimally invasive surgery, and robotic spine surgery. He also treats adult scoliosis, spine oncologic disorders, and spine trauma.
Dr. Viola emphasizes treating the patient as a whole person and developing a treatment plan that is personalized to each individual patient. He treats patients with a variety of non-surgical treatments and believes that surgery should be the last resort. When possible, he prefers to treat patients with minimally invasive spine surgery techniques, which can result in less post-operative pain and a quicker recovery.
Dr. Viola completed his orthopaedic spine surgery fellowship at the University of Connecticut, training with the leading experts in minimally invasive spine surgery and advanced surgical technology including augmented reality and robotics. He completed his residency at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he served as chief resident and received numerous awards including resident of the year. Prior to residency and fellowship, Dr. Viola attended medical school at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he was inducted into the honor society, and received his undergraduate degree from the University of Connecticut.
Dr. Viola has published textbook chapters and peer-reviewed publications on spine surgery and orthopaedic surgery. He has also presented at various regional and national conferences and developed training lectures for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) to further medical student education.
In his free time, Dr. Viola enjoys spending time with his wife, daughter, and their dog, Poppy. He enjoys golfing, surfing, playing the guitar, and traveling; especially to his home state of Maine in the summertime. He is an avid UConn Huskies basketball fan.
